Before starting Chapter 1, let’s quickly understand the IFC exam and how to use this course effectively.

1️⃣ What Is the IFC? 🇨🇦

IFC stands for:

  • 👉 Investment Funds in Canada

It is a course offered by the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) that teaches the foundations of mutual fund investing and the responsibilities of mutual fund representatives.

You’ll learn how to:

  • ➡️ Understand a client’s financial circumstances, goals and risk profile.

  • ➡️ Explain investment products and mutual funds.

  • ➡️ Assess whether an investment is suitable.

  • ➡️ Understand important regulatory, ethical and professional responsibilities.

Completing IFC helps you meet the proficiency requirements for becoming a mutual fund dealing representative. Passing the exam is part of the registration process—it does not automatically authorize you to sell mutual funds.

👉 Think of IFC as a foundation for working with mutual fund clients in Canada.

Prepare to work with the material in several ways:

  • ➡️ Understand: Explain how and why a concept works.
  • ➡️ Apply: Use a concept in a client situation.
  • ➡️ Calculate: Work through relevant formulas and interpret the result.
  • ➡️ Compare: Distinguish between similar products, funds or strategies.

For example, practise answering questions such as:

  • 👉 How do rising interest rates affect bond prices?
  • 👉 How do fees and taxes affect investment returns?
  • 👉 What should a representative do when a client requests an unsuitable investment?

Don’t focus only on memorization. Try to understand the logic behind each concept.

That’s why this course combines simple explanations + examples + calculations + games + questions.

5️⃣ How Should I Use This Course? 🎯

There are two ways to use this course:

🌱 Starting From Scratch

If you haven’t studied IFC before:

  • 👉 Start with the first lesson and continue in order.

The material is organized logically so you can build your understanding step by step.

  • Read the explanations.
  • Work through the examples.
  • Try the calculations yourself.
  • Complete the games and practice questions.
  • Review the chapter summary before moving forward.

📚 Already Studied IFC

If you already know the material and mainly need a review and summary:

  • 👉 Use the summary at the end of each chapter.
  • 👉 Complete the games and practice questions.
  • 👉 Revisit lessons where your understanding is weaker.
  • 👉 Practise calculations until you can explain the steps yourself.

6️⃣ IFC Practice Questions & Explanations 📝

At the end of each chapter, you’re gonna see that chapter’s sample IFC Questions. Chapter practice questions help you apply what you’ve learned.

For each question, we explain:

  • ➡️ Why the correct option is correct.
  • ➡️ Why the other options are incorrect.
  • ➡️ What concept is being tested.
  • ➡️ How to work through the calculation, where applicable.

👉 Don’t just check whether you got the answer right. Read the explanation and understand the reasoning.
