Before starting Element 1, let’s quickly understand the CIRE exam and how to use this course effectively.

1️⃣ What Is the CIRE? 🇨🇦

CIRE stands for:

  • 👉 Canadian Investment Regulatory Exam

It is an entry-level regulatory exam organized by CIRO under its new proficiency model.

If you want to work in certain roles at a CIRO Investment Dealer, the CIRE is one of the foundational proficiency requirements.

For example:

  • ➡️ Investment Representative (IR): CIRE is a required exam.
  • ➡️ Registered Representative (RR) – Retail: CIRE is followed by the Retail Securities Exam (RSE).
  • ➡️ Registered Representative (RR) – Institutional: CIRE is followed by the Institutional Securities Exam (ISE).

Think of CIRE as:

  • 👉 Your starting point for CIRO’s Investment Dealer proficiency path.

2️⃣ CIRE Exam Format & Registration 📝

The CIRE exam has:

  • ➡️ 110 multiple-choice questions
  • ➡️ 2 hours
  • ➡️ Proctored exam
  • ➡️ Remote or in-person testing
  • ➡️ 3 attempts allowed per enrolment
  • ➡️ Passing grade: CIRO does not publish a fixed percentage

Because the official passing standard is not published, for our mock exams we recommend aiming for at least:

  • 👉 65% or higher

This gives you a safer target rather than trying to guess the minimum passing score.

How to Register 🖥️

  • Step 1: Go to the CIRO Exam Hub.
  • Step 2: Scroll down and click Enrolment Portal.
  • Step 3: Scroll down to the Exams section, find Canadian Investment Regulatory Exam (CIRE), and click Enrol.
  • Step 4: Follow the instructions to create your account.
  • Step 5: Complete your enrolment and pay the CAD $475 exam fee + applicable tax.
  • Step 6: After enrolling, access the Candidate Portal to schedule your exam.
  • Step 7: Choose an available remote-proctored or in-person exam appointment.

3️⃣ How Is the CIRE Divided? 🧩

The exam contains 9 Elements and 110 questions.

The approximate number of questions from each Element is:

  • ➡️ Element 1 – Regulatory Framework: 11 questions
  • ➡️ Element 2 – Prospective Client Relationships: 11 questions
  • ➡️ Element 3 – Scope of Client Relationship: 17 questions
  • ➡️ Element 4 – Client Complaints Handling: 6 questions
  • ➡️ Element 5 – Market & Company Analysis: 9 questions
  • ➡️ Element 6 – Market Integrity, Trade Execution & Settlement: 13 questions
  • ➡️ Element 7 – Securities, Managed Products & Mutual Funds: 21 questions
  • ➡️ Element 8 – Derivatives: 6 questions
  • ➡️ Element 9 – Conflicts of Interest & Ethics: 16 questions

👉 Total = 110 Questions

4️⃣ What Kind of Questions Should I Expect? 🧠

According to the official syllabus, questions can test your ability to:

  • ➡️ Remember — recall a fact, rule, definition, or principle
  • ➡️ Understand — explain or recognize a concept
  • ➡️ Apply — use what you know in a situation or calculation
  • ➡️ Analyze — compare information and determine the appropriate conclusion

So don’t focus only on memorization. 👉 Try to understand the logic behind each concept.

That’s why this course combines simple explanations + examples + games + questions.

5️⃣ How Should I Use This Course? 🎯

There are two ways to use this course:

🌱 Starting From Scratch

If you haven’t studied CIRE before:

👉 Start with the first lesson and continue in order.

We have organized the material logically so you can build your understanding step by step.

📚 Already Studied CIRE

If you already know the material and mainly need a review and summary:

👉 Use the Summary at the end of each Element, complete the games, and test yourself with the questions.

6️⃣ Official CIRO Practice Questions 📝

At the end of each Element, we have included and analyzed relevant questions from the official CIRE practice exams released by CIRO.

For each question, we explain:

  • ➡️ Why the correct option is correct
  • ➡️ Why the other options are incorrect
  • ➡️ What concept is being tested

7️⃣ Our CIRE Exam Resources 🚀

Before we continue, I want to be clear about something:

👉 You don’t need to keep searching for more CIRE study resources.

We have built a complete set of resources to take you from learning the foundations → understanding the concepts → reviewing → practicing → preparing for the actual exam.

And I want to be transparent:

👉 This course may actually overprepare you — and that’s intentional.

We build the foundations logically and explain concepts in enough depth that, after taking the actual exam, you may think:

👉 “I was prepared for more than I actually needed!”

That’s exactly what I want.

Our mock exams are also intentionally designed to be challenging, with tricky scenarios and tempting answer choices.

👉 The goal isn’t to make your preparation unnecessarily difficult. It’s to prepare you for tougher scenarios,  so you’re not surprised if you encounter challenging questions on exam day and also build a solid foundation for your future exams such as RSE, ISE, CFA,…,

8️⃣ Before You Start — Promise Me These! 🤝
  • ➡️ Don’t skip lessons or games. They are arranged to build and reinforce your knowledge step by step.
  • ➡️ Don’t get stuck on one term. If something doesn’t completely make sense yet, continue. Important concepts will appear again through explanations, examples, games, summaries, and questions.
  • ➡️ Try every game yourself first. Make your choice before checking the answer.
  • ➡️ Understand instead of memorizing. Focus on why something works, not just remembering the words.
  • ➡️ Don’t worry about getting questions wrong. Mistakes during practice show you exactly what you need to review.
  • ➡️ Follow the process:
    👉 Learn → Practice → Review → Test Yourself

You don’t need to understand everything at once.

👉 Keep moving forward, and let the repetition, examples, games, and questions reinforce the concepts as you progress.

Now let’s start with Element 1! 🚀
